2024-04-01

On 27 March 2024, Professor Gonzalo Rodriguez-Pereyra, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and Senior Tutor at Oriel College, was invited to give a lecture on "The Bundle Theory of Objects" in the Lecture Theatre 406 of the School of Business, Xuhui Campus, East China University of Science and Technology. The event was organised by the International Affairs Office of the East China University of Science and Technology(ECUST) and hosted by ECUST School of Business, which attracted more than a hundred faculty members and students from the University to attend.

Before the start of the lecture, Prof. ZHAN Wangcheng, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Office of ECUST, and Associate Prof. PENG Zeyu, Director of the International Office of the School of Business, warmly received Prof. Rodriguez-Pereyra and his entourage. Both sides had a friendly talk and had an in-depth and fruitful exchange on the content of the lecture and possible future cooperation.

Professor Rodriguez-Pereyra has a profound research background and rich academic achievements in the field of philosophy, especially in ontology, epistemology and philosophy of mind. In the evening's lecture, he explained the complex connection between Bundle Theory and the Identity of Indiscernibles to the students and faculty members present in an easy-to-understand manner, and provided a thorough analysis of the main challenges facing this theory. He points out that even if Bundle Theory asserts that the essence of an object consists entirely of its properties, this does not negate the possibility that two objects may possess exactly the same properties and thus that there are objects that are exactly alike.

The lecture not only provided a valuable opportunity for our teachers and students to have a in-depth dialogue with renowned scholars from the world's top universities, but also inspired them to explore and think about the deeper topics of philosophy. During the Q&A session, Prof Gonzalo patiently answered various questions raised by the teachers and students, and had a warm and in-depth discussion with them, creating a lively atmosphere and enthusiastic response.
