ECUST

Located in the southwest of Shanghai, a centre of commerce, finance, culture and industrial production of China, East China University of Science and Technology is a dynamic and prominent research-intensive university with high teaching quality.

ECUST is comprised of nearly 1.7 million square meters on 2 campuses. The main campus, being 17 kilometres from Hongqiao Airport and 45 kilometres from Pudong International Airport, is situated in the prosperous and energetic Xuhui District. In addition to its downtown location, the university also features another campus in Fengxian District.

The history of education of the university can be dated back to Nanyang Public School (1896) and Université d’Aurora (1903). The university was officially founded in 1952 after the mergence of chemical or chemistry departments from Jiaotong University, Université d’Aurora, Utopia University, Soochow University and Jiangnan University, and became the first chemical industry-oriented university in China named as East China Institute of Chemical Technology.

With the value of “Diligence, Factuality, Aspiration and Virtue”, ECUST has always been making every endeavour to develop its united and pioneering spirit since its establishment, and is dedicated to providing its students with advanced knowledge and skills in an academic environment full of intellectual stimulation and scientific innovation.

Today, the university has 17 academic schools, together with the MoE-approved Sino-French joint school, International Elite Engineering School. A wide range of programmes, covering 11 disciplines, namely science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, art, philosophy and education, is offered to cater to the demands of the society and to prepare the students for an ever-changing global context. Chemistry is among Top 1‰ of World ESI Ranking, and Materials Science, Engineering, Biochemistry and Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Environment/Ecology have walked into Top 1% group. Besides the education carried out in China, ECUST also takes initiative going global by establishing China’s first International Business School in Sibiu, Romania and building the first Confucius Institute featured in Science and Technology Innovation with the University of Huddersfield in UK.

Housing one Joint Research Centre headed by 2016 Nobel Laureate in chemistry Ben Feringa, one Research Centre of Contracts and Governance named after 2016 Nobel Laureate in Economics Sciences Oliver Hart, together with five international joint laboratories, the university aims at global frontiers of science and technology and committed to high-level joint education and research for building a better shared future of mankind.

As of January 2023, ECUST has over 2,9000 full-time students, including 16,766 undergraduates, 10,175 postgraduates and 2103 doctoral students. The faculty and staff members have reached more than 3,000, among whom there are 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the European Academy of Sciences, and more than 130 national-level talents such as winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund.

School of Business

Founded in 1983, ECUST School of Business integrates the disciplines of economics and management and is committed to the integration and development of both. The School has five departments, including the Department of Management Science and Engineering, the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Economics, the Department of Accounting, and the Department of Finance. The School now has a key research base of humanities and social sciences of colleges and universities in Shanghai: the Research Centre for Energy Economics and Environmental Management; a research base for decision-making consultation of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government: the Shanghai Research Centre for Public Economics and Social Governance; university-level research institutes and research teams such as the Institute of Economic Development, the Research Centre for Operations and Supply Chain Management, and the Research Centre for Econophysics; and research institutes in the School such as the Institute of Corporate Finance, the Institute of Marketing Science, the Institute of Human Resource Management (HRM), and the Research Centre for Accounting Informatisation and Financial Decision. Relying on the University and the industry, the School has established the SINOPEC-ECUST Research Centre of Energy and Chemical Industry and the Lingang-ECUST Free Trade Zone Innovation Research Institute; and has established the Oliver Hart Research Centre of Contracts and Governance, named after Professor Oliver Hart, the winner of the 2016 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

The School currently offers 11 undergraduate programmes, 3 academic master programmes; 3 PhD programmes; and 4 professional master programmes. The School offers the UC-ECUST Joint MBA Programme together with the University of Canberra, Australia, and Sino- French Double Degree EMBA Programme in collaboration with Rennes School of Business, France. The School’s international partners are renowned institutions, many of which are accredited by authoritative organisations. Featuring internationalisation, the School provides students with a platform for international exchange and multicultural learning. The School has established cooperation with more than 50 well-known academic institutions around the world, such as University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Bristol, Queen Mary University of London, University of Surrey, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, Technical University of Berlin, and University of Bologna. Many of the School’s international partners are highly ranked globally, with 24 of them ranked top 300 in QS World University Rankings 2024. On April 10th, 2018, the School and the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania (Sibiu University for short) officially signed a contract to jointly establish the “ECUST Sibiu Sino-European International Business School”(ECUST-Sibiu SEIBS). It is the first Sino-foreign institution set up by the School overseas, and also the first international business school jointly established by China and Romania.

The School boasts a faculty team with profound academic achievements and years of teaching experience. By July 2023, the School has 176 full-time faculty members, including 40 professors and 75 associate professors; 159 faculty members with doctoral degrees or above; 31 faculty members with doctoral degrees obtained from institutions outside Chinese mainland; and 130 faculty members with overseas experience. With equal emphasis on research and teaching, the School undertakes many national and international research and consulting projects every year. Particularly, seven of its faculty members have won the Sun Yefang Economic Science Award. One faculty member was conferred the Zhang Peigang Development Economics Award (Young Scholar Award), 1 faculty member was selected for the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and several faculty members were selected for the National “Ten Thousand Talents Programme”, the Programme for New Century Excellent Talents in University of the MoE, the Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation, the Shanghai Shuguang Programme, and other talent programmes. Many faculty members have been appointed as economics and management consultants by government and enterprises. The School has also appointed dozens of well-known professors and experts from home and abroad as honorary professors, visiting professors or adjunct professors.

The School has established close ties with many multinational and domestic companies, and provided decision-making advice and solutions for government authorities, enterprises and institutions. It has gained strong support from all sectors of the society during its development.

The School was accredited by AMBA (The Association of MBAs) in 2012, re-accredited in 2017 and jointly re-accredited by AMBA and BGA (Business Graduates Association) in 2023, all with a five-year validity. It was accredited by AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2020 with a five-year validity. In terms of domestic accreditation, the School passed the “Chinese Advanced Management Education Accreditation” (CAMEA) in 2014, making it one of the first seven universities in China to pass this accreditation.
