He is currently a Boya Distinguished Professor at Peking University, former Dean of the National Development Institute at Peking University, and a Distinguished Professor in the Ministry of Education's Major Talent Project. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Economics (Quarterly) and the President of the Chinese Economics Annual Conference. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Geography at Peking University in 1986 and his Ph.D. in Development Economics from the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996. He has been awarded the Sun Yefang Economic Science Prize, the Pu Shihui Prize in International Economics, and the Zhang Peigang Prize in Development Economics. He was named one of the Top Ten Teachers at Peking University in 2006 and one of the Top Ten Graduate Supervisors at Peking University in 2017. His current research focuses on New Political Economy and China's economic growth under open conditions. He has published over a hundred academic papers in domestic and international journals, including Chinese Social Sciences and the American Economic Review. He has authored books such as Institutions and Efficiency: Dialogues with Douglass North and The Global Significance of the Chinese Development Path. He has also published hundreds of popular articles and comments in magazines and newspapers such as Reading and the People's Daily, and has contributed articles to English-language publications including the Financial Times and China Daily.
